Commercial breeders looking for a terminal sire which throws easy finishing progeny that mature around 20 months should take a close look at the Red Charolais bulls.
It is a recessive gene the Charolais throw, like the Angus throw a Red Angus.
Their moderate frame, soft fleshing, easy doing cattle and great muscling which good grass to meat conversion rates which make them an ideal crossing bull for Hereford and Angus cows.
All the bulls are eye muscle scanned and have large rib eyes with an eye muscle area of 120 to 130sq cm at 18 months of age. They carry an extra 2-3mm more fat around the rib and rump than some of the white Charolais.
Though only moderately framed compared with the more conventional Charolais their progeny finishes well, maturing at 20 months and achieving live weights off 700kg even in adverse conditions We have fattened steers by our bulls and finished them over one winter to 20 months and killed them in April at 280-320kg on the hooks and they yielded 54 to 58%. Commercial breeders will appreciate this quicker turnover of capital.
The Red cows are good milker ans produce strong, rich, high-protein milk. Their smaller udders hold the milk up and they have very good teat structures – not too big to prevent calves drinking easily, which allows their calves to achieve 350-400kg weaning weights.
