Our goal when Maungahina was first established in 1907 was the same as it is today; To breed and sell quality genetics that stand the test of time, yield high returns and dominate in our clients breeding program
— Bruce McKenzie

Our Difference

Maungahina is a Hereford, and Speckle Park stud, farmed by Bruce McKenzie a fourth-generation and Mark McKenzie a fifth generation of the founding McKenzie family.
It has always been the management policy to raise and sell the bulls under natural conditions, and owing to this policy, over the years Maungahina bulls have proved to be outstanding in stamina and constitution.
We use genetics to up fertility, muscling, size and outcross of the genetic base to improve our breed and introduce new bloodlines to New Zealand.
We want bulls that will perform extremely well in New Zealand and structural soundness is the key to our conditions.

You’re invited

On behalf of the McKenzie family it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our 78th on farm auction Bull Sale.

It has been a very tough twelve months for many farmers and producers throughout the East Coast.  I feel for many in Northland, Auckland, Wairoa, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Tinui areas where Cyclone Gabrielle wreaked havoc and did the most damage.  Here at Maungahina we didn’t fair too bad.

As farmers we are resilient, but with climate change, government rules and regulations it’s getting tougher - it’s time for change.  As farmers and seedstock producers we need to stand up, not only for our country but our family land and livestock as we are the best producers of grass fed beef in the world and we need to secure this for the future of the next generations to come before it is too late.

In the Herefords this year we have been concentrating on extra carcase, muscle, yield and IMF.  We have seen a massive difference in the past couple of years by using NJW Endure and Holyfield.  I feel our cattle are definitely improving and the bulls are exhibiting the traits that we have been chasing, especially after seeing the scan data in March.

This year’s lineup of Speckle Park are mainly Promise, Northern Star and Monty.  We are lucky enough to have bred sires that are in the top of the breed at the moment and using Promise and Northern Star are an example of the quality coming through this year.  We have also been concentrating on marbling (IMF) as you can see with the scan data.  After 18 years in this breed, I am confident to say this breed is hard to beat for quality of carcase and consistency of marbling next to Wagyu, yet high yielding and early maturing.  I have just come back from sales in Australia and it was very humbling to see a lot our genetics preforming well which boads well for the future of the breed here in NZ.
We look forward to seeing our valued clients, new clients and friends to celebrate 116 years of breeding on the 8th of June.
